Project Overview

Global Volunteer Solutions works in collaboration with children support organization and local NGOs that has numerously wonderfully worthwhile care projects in Sri Lanka. Our project placement is located in Galle, Candy and Colombo. Sri Lanka is country of great beauty, but its people are still coming to terms with the devastation of the tsunami in late 2004. The killer waves of this tsunami took away the lives of many people and thus make thousands of children orphans. While many others become orphan as they lost their parents from unforeseen circumstances like HIV AIDS etc. These children are deprived of many opportunities for their development. They are deprived of education, freedom and are forced to work under hard conditions even at very young age. About 19% of children in Sri Lanka are estimated to be victims of child labor. As they don’t have the opportunity to get education so they remain unaware of their rights and thus are exploited by the society. In the meanwhile conditions of the orphanages are basic and the staff heavily overworked, so these children are often deprived of special care and interaction. Thus in these miserable situations the role of volunteers is greatly appreciated. You can help these children simply by pouring your love and care.

Responsibilities and Role of a Volunteer:

Your role as a volunteer in this program is quite challenging but what you receive in the service of these innocent and disadvantaged children is something really invaluable that you may not be able to get in any other profession. You will help to provide vital care, love and support to these adorable children. While volunteering, you have to perform several responsibilities such as teaching them English, assisting them with various activities including games, sports, education, hygiene, sanitation & counseling. Besides teaching English you can also teach them some other subjects like math, computer IT etc depending upon your skills. You are also welcome to teach these orphan children various skills like cooking, sewing, painting, singing, dancing, typing and reading etc. In addition to this if you have fundraising skills, then you can also involve in this activity to help raise enough funds for the underfinanced orphanages. Your love, support and care for these orphan children has much more effect in their lives than any financial help. Just through your help they will be able to make their present secure and their future promising.
PLEASE NOTE: You don’t need to worry about the job because the schedule is flexible and thus makes you able to adjust soon in the new environment. You are needed to work only for 3 – 4 hours a day and 5 – 6 days a week. You can get the work schedule from orphanage staff that will be in touch with you all the time to provide you any help or activity you needed in the project. You are also expected to make certain interruption in the schedule due to traditional, cultural festivals, your exams and other similar situations. During these times you are not allowed to work and can enjoy short holiday.
