Work in orphanages home

Project Overview

GVS offers this program for all those who want to help orphans by providing great encouragement to them. There are many innocent children that feel left out and are waiting for any kind of support from you especially in the areas of Abor, Hohoe, Vakpo and Kasoa in Ghana. We work in collaboration with several orphanage centers to give our volunteers an opportunity to help those who need it the most. It is estimated that there are more than 1,100,000 orphans in Ghana. Many of them have become orphaned due to different reasons such as, the death of one or both parents, extreme poverty or HIV/AIDS etc. You will be shocked to see that these children are deprived of even basic things like food, cloth, shelter, education etc. Since these children don't have anyone to look after them, they involved themselves in dangerous activities. Several orphanages in Ghana have been established to provide shelter, cloth and food to the orphans. These children here are aged between 1 to 16 years old. But sadly, those orphanages have poor resources, shortage of funds and lack of trained manpower, as a result of which poor orphans are not getting the attention they need for better development. Therefore they need help from outside, which is why our volunteer orphanage project is important. If you are willing to provide your love and attention to these children then you are warmly welcome by us.

Responsibilities and Role of a Volunteer:

While volunteering at orphanage centers, you will be allotted with different responsibilities depending upon the need of orphanage, as well as your own abilities, capabilities and interest. Generally you will be assisting the staff in counseling and taking care of children. As there is only one staff that look after 40-50 children at a time, so it is very hard for them to manage everything. Therefore your help in this program is really needed and appreciated. You can help the children in feeding, bathing and brushing teeth etc. You may also help them in their homework after schools. You can teach these orphans English, science, math, IT or any other subject at which you are good. You also need to assist in basic chores such as cooking, washing, ironing clothes, building structures and keeping the girls and boys dormitories clean. You can also provide basic education and some tips to the children about personal hygiene and sanitation. You can make the children smile by simply bringing some light stuff such as toys, games and colorful books etc. You can also help in organizing extracurricular activities such as playing games, music, and dancing, sewing, typing, painting, drawing, arts and craft activities. You can also organize extra classes for children after school. You may also ask to help in administration section for fund raising or other tasks. Thus your help can make a positive difference in the life of unfortunate children. Your journey to Ghana is not only a holiday but a life experience that you will never forget.

PLEASE NOTE: Our work schedule is flexible. You are required to work for only 3 - 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday. You may also choose to work in mornings or afternoons only. You can get the work schedule from orphanage staff that will help you to provide all the activities you needed in the project. You are also expected to make certain disruptions in the work schedule due to your exam, cultural and traditional festivals, or other similar situations. During these times you are not allowed to work and can go home for short holiday.

There is no need to have any special skills, qualification or prior experience to participate in the program.
