Work in orphanages home

Project Overview

Becoming a GVS volunteer in this project is both easy and rewarding experience. You just need to have a strong desire to help underprivileged and abandoned children. While working in this project you can provide the important attention, care and enrichment to the most needed children across Dar Es Salam, Arusha, Moshi and some other rural and urban parts of Tanzania. We are working in collaboration with local organizations and orphanage centers to give you the chance to help disadvantaged children. Tanzania is a country where extreme poverty, HIV/AIDS and other fatal diseases left more than 2.6 million children orphaned. While you volunteer in Tanzania, you will see the tragedy of these children by your own eyes. They are struggling with homelessness and are scavenging for food in bins. They sleep in open beach, junked boats and streets, and support themselves by begging or stealing etc. Studies have shown that orphaned children are more vulnerable to sickness, malnutrition, unemployment, illiteracy, crime and increased exposure to HIV/AIDS. Although, most of the orphanages are struggling to provide food, shelter, education and care to these underprivileged children but due to limited staff, limited resources and severe funding they are not achieving their goal effectively. The limited number of staff doesn't have enough time to provide the attention necessary for the children development. This is why your role as a volunteer is much needed here. Children in orphanage centers are aged between 2-16 years. You can help the orphaned children to have the same hope and opportunities enjoyed by those children who are not orphaned.

Responsibilities and Role of a Volunteer:

As an orphanage volunteer, you will help the most vulnerable children. These children receive much needed attention, love, care, hope and encouragement from volunteers. Your major role in this project is to assist the limited staff members in taking care of children. You have different roles to undertake. You may help the children in feeding, bathing, brushing teeth and tidying their beds. You will teach the children English, math, IT, science or any other subject at which you are good. You can also assist them in their everyday activities such as helping them in their home work after school, creating awareness among them about personal hygiene and sanitation, taking them for medical checkups in healthcare centers etc. You can also teach the children various skills depending upon your interest and talent such as sewing, painting, drawing, cooking, dancing, reading and typing. You can also entertain the children by organizing games, dancing and singing lessons and other creative education. You can bring smile on the faces of innocent children by simply taking colorful books, toys and games etc for them. You can also arrange day trips for the children with the help of local staff. You are also expected to work in kitchen, garden, and administrative section. Thus your help in this project can empower the children to face challenges in life, poverty and exploitation.

PLEASE NOTE: During volunteering, your working hours will vary depending upon number of volunteers in the project. However, most of the working hours are very flexible. Generally you will work for 3 to 4 hours per day and 5 to 6 days per week, remaining time will be free. The orphanage staff will provide you day-to-day working schedule so we recommend you to work closely with them to adjust with your schedule and environment. Besides this, you will also find some disruption in the work schedule because of cultural, traditional festival, your exams or other similar situations. During these times you can go home for short holiday.

Project Skills and Education Requirements:

You do not need any specific qualification or prior experience for volunteering in this project. However you must be at least 18 years of age or above and should know medium level of English. Working with children is challenging and rewarding job so you need to have an open mind, flexible attitude, love and eagerness to work with the orphaned children. You are also expected to be hardworking, patient, imaginative and able to handle the children. You should also have a genuine interest in the development of children.
