Project Overview

This is the opportunity for caring and motivated volunteers who love to work with underprivileged and disadvantaged children. Our program works in relationship with children's home and orphanages in the areas of Atenas and some other rural and urban parts of Costa Rica to offer care, help and basic education to the orphaned children. It is estimated that about 36,000 children are orphaned in Costa Rica. Many of them have become orphaned due to poverty, death of one or both parents, alcoholism, and some fatal diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS etc. By no mistake of their own, they will find themselves subjected to a life they could never have imagined. Your eyes will get watery when you see the tragedy of these orphaned children. They are lost, confused, hungry and crying out for someone who can provide them with the basic human need. However, to provide shelter, food, clothing and basic education to these underprivileged children, many orphanages have been established with the help of local organizations and some kindhearted people. But as these orphanages are non-profit and do not have any support from government so these are mostly understaffed and poorly resourced. Therefore they are looking for any kind of help from outside. Thus here is the perfect way for you to participate and help young orphaned children. These children are aged between 2 to 16 years. Just through your compassion, love and care, these children can empower to challenge a life of further poverty and exploitation.

Responsibilities and Role of a Volunteer:

Depending upon your abilities and capabilities, you will be allocated with different roles and responsibilities. However, your main tasks include assisting orphanage staff in counseling and taking care of children, helping children in feeding, bathing, dressing, and brushing teeth. You will also teach the children English or some other subjects depending upon your skills and interest such as mathematics, IT, health or science etc. You can help them with their homework after school and workshop assignments. You can also do some basic needs work such as cooking, washing & ironing clothes, working in the garden, building structures and keeping the orphanage clean. You can also educate the children in the areas of personal hygiene. You also need to help them in organizing extracurricular activities, such as playing games, singing songs, dancing, performing dramas and solving puzzles etc. If you have talent and ability, then you are also welcome to teach the children different skills like cooking, sewing, typing, painting and reading etc. You can also donate some money, old clothes, blanket, toys, colorful books and games etc to the children in orphanage. You may also be involved with fundraising or improving the appearance of the project. Thus, your stay in Costa Rica will be the most rewarding experience and we assure you that at the end of project you will really feel satisfied that you have done something good for the poor orphaned children of Costa Rica.

PLEASE NOTE: We are providing you with such a work schedule that is really flexible and adjustable with your needs and comfort. Your working hours mainly depend upon number of volunteers in the project but we recommend you to work for 3 to 4 hours per day and 4 to 5 days per week. As working in the new environment may be challenging therefore we encourage you to work closely with orphanage staff to become familiar with the new environment and project. You can also receive the work schedule from them. They will provide you all the help you need in the project. Besides this, you will also find little disruptions in the work schedule due to national holidays, traditional or cultural festivals, your exams or other similar situations. During these times you are allowed to manage your free time for a short holiday trip.
