Project Overview

Volunteering at daycare center is a challenging, but ultimately very rewarding and satisfying experience as you see the positive impact you make on the lives of young kids. Our project is in partnership with many daycare care centers located in and around the Atenas, Barrio Santa Eulalia, Alajuela, La Garita and some other parts of Costa Rica. Many people believe that Costa Rica is a rich county and does not have the needs like other Central American countries, but in actual these people are unaware about the dark side of Costa Rica. Despite a rich country, there are still many poor people in Costa Rica working at low wage. These people cannot even afford the living cost of their children. They are unable to send their children to private daycare centers, thus they rely on public daycare system. They drop their children here at the morning and then picked them up after returning from work. These public daycare centers are struggling to provide a safe, clean and friendly environment to the children, where they can eat and play while their parents are working. The children here are aged between 0 - 5 years old. The main objective of daycare center is to prepare the children for school. But it's hard to say that these centers are underfunded and does not have any support from government. Moreover there are only few caregivers available for managing hundreds of children. As a result young children are not getting the individual attention. Therefore they need yours support. The children will love to be with you and you will also feel it.

Responsibilities and Role of a Volunteer:

Working with children in daycare project is a great experience. You will be enjoying assisting the friendly and hardworking staff of daycare centers. As a volunteer, you will be working with children in small groups to teach them Basic English vocabulary such as, colors, numbers, and greetings etc. You will be taking care of children while they are playing in the backyard, feed them during snack or lunch time. You can also help them by playing games with them, tidy up the toys, prepare food for them, and make sure the children eat and then brush their teeth. You can also assist the children in changing nappies and taking bath. You may also be asked by the staff to help with other activities like, working in the garden, painting or preparing teaching material. The children love listening to you read stories and learning new English words. You can entertain the children by extracurricular activities like performing puppet shows, dancing, singing songs, and nursery rhymes. If you like to support the public daycare project by bringing colorful charts, toys, games, baby milk powder, diapers, baby talcum powder, baby bottles and clothing (underwear pants) etc then you are more than welcome. In addition, you can also donate some money to the daycare center to make them financially strong and healthy. Thus, as a volunteer in this project you will be making a great difference to the lives of poor people. Moreover, you have the opportunity to act as a role model for children and leave a lasting impression in their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: The daycare centers are open during Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm. You have the choice to work in morning or in afternoon for only 3-4 hours/day. We recommend you to work closely with the staff of daycare centers that are very cooperative and friendly, and love to help you during your stay. You can also get the work schedule from them. You are also expected to make certain disruptions in the current work schedule due to your exam, national and cultural festivals, national holidays or other similar situations. During that period we don't allow you to work. Instead we recommend you to manage your free time for a short holiday trip. Remember, the kids at each daycare centers have no real schedule.
